The media did not make room for Trump's speech to the January 24 march of life in the United States. I think, however, it is interesting to know what he said.
March for Life 2020, Trump's full text
Thank you very much and thank you, Jeanne. It is a profound honor for me to be the first president in history to participate in the March for Life. We are here for a very simple reason: to defend the right of every child, born and unborn, to realize the potential that God has given him. [applause]
For 47 years, Americans of all backgrounds have traveled from all over the country to defend life. And today, as President of the United States, I am very proud to be here with you. [applause]
I want to welcome tens of thousands of high school and college students - this is a tremendous influx - who have made long bus trips to be here in the capital of our nation. And to make you feel even better, there are tens of thousands of people outside that we met upon entering. If someone wanted to give up his place, we can find a solution. We have a huge group of people outside. Thousands and thousands of people wanted to enter. This is a big hit. [applause]
Young people are the heart of the March for Life. And it is your generation that is making America the pro-family, pro-life nation. [applause]
The life movement is led by strong women, amazing faith leaders and brave students who carry on the legacy of pioneers before us who fought to raise the conscience of our nation and uphold the rights of our citizens. You embrace mothers with care and compassion. You are strengthened by prayer and motivated by your selfless love. You are grateful and we are so grateful - these are incredible people - to be joined by Secretary Alex Azar (Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services) and Kellyanne Conway (President Trump's advisor). [applause]
And thanks also to Senators Mike Lee and James Lankford who are here. Thank you guys. And to representatives Steve Scalise, Chris Smith, Ralph Abraham, Warren Davidson, Bob Latta, John Joyce, Lloyd Smucker, Brian Fitzpatrick and Brad Wenstrup. Thank you all. I have to say - and I look at it, and I see it exactly - that we have many more politicians in the audience. But if you don't mind, I won't introduce them all. All of us here understand an eternal truth: every child is a precious and sacred gift from God. Together, we must protect, safeguard and defend the dignity and holiness of every human life. [applause]
When we see the image of a baby in the womb, we glimpse the majesty of God's creation. When we hold a baby in our arms, we know the infinite love that every baby brings to the family. When we watch a child grow, we see the radiance that radiates from every human soul. A life changes the world - from my family, and I can tell you, I send you love, and I send you a great, great love - and from the first day in office, I took historical action to support American families and to protect the unborn. [applause]
And during my first week in office, I reinstated and expanded the Mexico City Policy (the US government policy that blocks US federal funding for non-governmental organizations that provide abortion services or abortion counseling, ed. ) and we have enacted a fundamental pro-life rule to govern the use of Title X taxpayer funds. I notified Congress that I would veto any legislation that weakens pro-life policy or encourages the destruction of human lives.
At the United Nations, I made it clear that global bureaucrats do not have the right to attack the sovereignty of nations that protect innocent life (when the UN does not provide aid to third world countries unless they adopt abortion laws, ed.). Unborn children have never had a stronger defender in the White House. [applause]
As the Bible tells us, every person is beautifully made. [applause]
We have taken decisive action to protect religious freedom - so important - religious freedom has been attacked all over the world and, frankly, it has been attacked very strongly in our nation. You see it better than anyone else. But we are stopping it. And we are dealing with doctors, nurses, teachers and groups such as the Little Sisters of the Poor (the order of the nuns that is legally fighting, up to the United States high court, for the right not to pay contributions in favor of contraception and abortion as expected by Obama, ed.) [applause]
We are preserving faith-based adoption and to support our foundation documents, we have appointed 187 federal judges, who apply the consultation in writing, including two phenomenal Supreme Court judges - Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. We are protecting the rights of pro-life students to free speech on university campuses. And if universities want federal taxpayer dollars, then they must uphold their First Amendment right to say what they think. And if they don't, they'll pay a big financial penalty, which they won't be willing to pay. [applause]
Unfortunately, the far left is working to erase the rights that have been given to us by God, to close faith-based charities, to ban religious leaders from the streets and to silence Americans who believe in the sanctity of life . They hunt me down because I fight for you and we fight for those who have no voice. And we will win because we know how to win. We all know how to win. We all know how to win. You have won for a long time. You have won for a long time.
Together, we are the voice of the voiceless. When it comes to abortion - and you know it, you've seen what happened - the Democrats have embraced the most radical and extreme positions taken and seen in this country for years and decades, and it can even be said, for centuries.
Most major Democrats in Congress now support taxpayer-funded abortion right up to birth. Last year, New York lawmakers joyfully applauded the approval of legislation that would allow a baby to be pulled from the womb to childbirth.
Then, we had the case of the Democratic governor in the state of Virginia, the Commonwealth of Virginia. And we love the Commonwealth of Virginia, but what's going on in Virginia? What's going on? The governor said he would execute a child after birth. Remember this.
Senate Democrats even blocked legislation that would give medical assistance to children who survive abortion attempts. And that's why I invited Congress - two of our great senators here, many of our congressmen here - to defend the dignity of life and to pass legislation that prohibits late abortion (late-term abortion, ed.) of babies who may feel pain in the womb. [applause]
This year, the March for Life celebrates the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which forever sanctioned women's voting rights in the United States and enshrined in the United States Constitution. Such a big event. Today, millions of extraordinary women across America are using the power of their vote to fight for the right and all their rights, as stated in the Declaration of Independence - it is the right to life. [applause]
To all the women here today, your devotion and leadership lift our entire nation and we thank you for it. The tens of thousands of Americans gathered today not only fight for life - it is precisely here that they fight so proudly together. And I want to thank everyone for this. You fight for life every day. You provide housing, education, work and medical care to the women you serve. Find loving families for children who need a home forever. Host showers for expectant mothers. Do - make sure that your life's mission is to help spread the grace of God.
And to all the mothers here today, we celebrate you and declare that mothers are heroes. Your strength, your devotion and your drive are what feeds our nation. Thanks to you, our country has been blessed with extraordinary souls that have changed the course of human history.
We cannot know what our unborn citizens will get. The dreams they will imagine. The masterpieces they will create. The discoveries they will make. But we know this: every life brings love to this world. Every child brings joy to a family. Each person is worth protecting. And above all we know that every human soul is divine and every human life, born and unborn, is made in the image and likeness of Almighty God. [applause]
Together, we will defend this truth in all our magnificent land. We will free the dreams of our people. And with firm hope, we look forward to all the blessings that will come from the beauty, talent, purpose, nobility and grace of every American child.
I want to thank you. This is a very special moment. It's so nice to represent you. I love you all. And I say with real passion, thank you, God bless you, and God bless America.
Thank you all. Thank you all. [applause]
