Olivia, the historical and famous Popeye fiancee, is a character created by EC Segar in 1919.
Olivia, who is Oyl by surname, was therefore born a decade before Popeye and her name is a tribute of the author to her youth.
At 18, Segar decided to become a cartoonist and studied a WL Evans cartoon course in Cleveland, Ohio. In order to successfully pass this course, Segar had to study the evening after the workday. While studying, he was accompanied by a lamp lit by olive oil. For this reason, the author wanted to pay homage to the ingredient that accompanied him during the long and studious evenings that turned him into a great cartoon design professional.
A decade later, in January 1929, the series' popularity skyrocketed when Segar inserted Popeye as a secondary character. From there, Olive was put into a supporting role, while the sailor became the main character in the series.
